ZANZIBAR has recorded a decline in cholera cases aid to support the fight against epidemic continues to flow.
“We were receiving between 40 to 60 patients daily, but this week we received between 5 and 20 patients. This is an achievement for us. Let’s devote our energies into fighting the epidemic,” said Dr Fadhil.
He said on Wednesday that the Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) at Chumbuni received only 12 patients while in other centres had five patients or none.
He attributed the decline to multiple interventions which include awareness to observe health regulations. Both Dr Dahoma and the Minister of Health Mahmoud Thabit Kombo said the success recorded should not make people relax in the battle against the disease.
The mobile phone company, ZANTEL, through its director Mohamed Khamis Mussa donated various items worth over 11m/- to help surveillance activities.
Apart from ZANTEL’s donation, the ZTE, a Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems company, handed over items worth 42m/- to Zanzibar First Lady Mwanamwema Shein at the State House towards the battle against the disease.
Meanwhile, the Office of Chief Government Statistician revealed here yesterday that the rate of inflation increased last month following a decline in the previous month. Unveiling the monthly ‘Consumer Price Index (CPI)’ to the media here, the head of the statistics unit, Khamis Ahmada Shauri, said inflation increased from 9.7 percent in March to 10.1 per cent last month.
“Food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate increased to 14.4 percent in April from 11.3 percent recorded in March; non-food inflation decreased to 5.1 percent in April compared to 7.2 percent recorded in March,” he said.
He said that the overall index increased to 121.4 in April from 110.3 recorded in April, 2015. Shauri said that food and non-alcoholic beverages group increased to 14.4 percent. About 269 commodities are monitored monthly by OCGS-Zanzibar to have the CPI.
